Prefer soft plastics not only for the diversity in designs, but versatility in presentation. Nice thing is that they catch ALL species from big catfish to panfish and bass.
One design I found worked by accident and it involves using a mini stick wacky rigged.

It's nothing more than a 2 1/4" stick bait that I poured rigged with a light jighead. The action on the drop is the same as a 5" Senko wacky rigged on a bare hook.

For the heck of it I figured,
why not cut the tails off some curl tail grubs, fuse the bodies together with a candle flame and use them the same way!
The concept is the same except the action must be added using rod twitches at different depths from 3-8'. Here are some examples using different grub bodies:
