Size your hook to the amount of Hot Dog or cut bait you want to use. It works with straight, treble or circle hooks. I even like a wide gap 2/0 heavy bass hook. Lots of room for the bait and still get a hook up. Best Catfish hooks are 2/0 Gama Circle Red, Owner Mutu (make sure they are heavy, not light wire) and 7/0 Daiichi Red D84Z. What's your favorites? Looks like it will work. I'll give it a try next time cat fishing.

We use hot dogs on trotlines a lot and it is a very productive way to fish. I buy the cheapest dogs I can get; which is usually the Bar S brand. I'll lay the entire package on a cutting board and with my sharpest butcher knife cut the whole package (package and all makes the job a lot easier) into about 1/2" thick slices. I dump the sliced dogs into a gallon zip lock bag and one package of black cherry Koolaid and about three heaping tablespoons of garlic powder. I shake up this mixture and put it in the fridge for a while, usually a couple of hours. I use 2/0 stainless hooks on my trotlines and these slices are usually perfect to completely conceal the point and most of the body of the hook. When you put these in the water they look just like they are bleeding real blood and even though there is no sugar involved they give off a sweet garlic like aroma. This set up will usually attract those 2 to 3 pound or slightly larger cats that are just right for eating and usually in large numbers.........

Blue cats will bite on almost anything. I have caught them on weenies, spam, chicken livers, beef liver, and almost any cut bait. Most scraps from the kitchen. I have heard of weird things like soap and onion but aint ever tried it. Chanel or flat head cats are more particular and typically only bite live bait.

I'll bring some tooth picks so I can eat them as appetisers while I wait for the catfish!

my neighbor slaughters da big cats this time of year. I was drinking a beer with him the other day and e had had a few.......6 packs and I got his trick outa him. he has in the fridge in his shed some weenies in a 3 gallon bucket. soaking in vinager garlic strawberry jelly and salt. he said the salt draws moisture outa them and sure enough they were kinda skinny in half inch chunks. I stabbed one with my pocket knife and sure enough it was down right leathery. he ahd 2 buckets one he was using and one that was gettig ready. He said thas his bait and he is the best fisherman i know so must work. or else it was the pile of beer cans trying to bs me who knows.
