Saline / Larto Weekend Fishing Report

Water Temperature; 52 to 54 degrees
Water Condition; Some areas a little debris from recent rains and, some areas fairly clear. Water level is up a little from normal, again due to rains.

Fishing still seems a little poor and the catch seems to go form one day good, to one day poor. Fished the Shriner’s Bass Tournament out of Woodson’s Landing in Deville, LA. The showing was a little low compared to the average crowd. A total of 49 teams/boats participated in the tournament. Weigh in was at 3 pm. Here were the results;
1st place; 19.8 lbs, 5 fish
2nd place; 12.7 lbs, 5 fish
3rd place; 12 3 lbs, 5 fish
There was quite a spread from first to second, not typical as the weights have traditionally been fairly close. There were a few more that made a weigh in, but a lot zipped. This is not typical for the Saline/Larto complex, but it has been a trying 2103/2014 season.

White Perch (Crappie) seem to follow suit as well. With the water temps. pushing closer to the spawn temperature, we are looking for a good year for White Perch. Hopefully we will have a high back water this year, which we typically get every spring (but have not for the past 2 years), which not only brings in fresh oxygenated water from the Black River, but also a lot of fish that will help re-supply our fish stock. Mostly people are fishing the Buzzard Roost area near Larto, drift and spider rigging, with a few casting a pop cork rig. It is wise to have both shiners and jigs with you, but shiners seem to be the bait of choice. The bite will improve in Big Creek, as well as Larto bayou, Muddy bayou, Nolan’s bayou and nearby Horse Island with the onset of the spawn and fishing will transition form open deep water fishing to shallow water structure and bank fishing.

This week's weather forecast is unfavorable once again with temperature diving to the lows in the 30’s and highs in the 50’s, more rain and storms. This will likely continue to confuse the spring spawn and further downplay fishing this upcoming week.

RROD good report and just what we need for this forum. The back water thing really effects the Ouachita River complex too. If everything hits right the fish will spawn in the back waters in the woods and return to the river when in comes down as 2 and 3 inch long fingerlings. This raises their survival rate tremendously. I noticed this when I first started fishing the river years ago, when I'd get in the back waters you'd see these schools of fingerlings everywhere.......

It's about the same effect here. There are guys that will get in waders and make thier way back into the buttonwoods and thats where you will find them throughout the spawn. It is safe haven for the fingerlings though. I am a little to lazy and old to be wondering around out there like that so I remain in the boat. Besides even though I live around snakes and alligators, I prefer there to be some separation between us.........
Weathers gone cold now once again jeeeeez, just can't catch a break on the water temps.

We got 3 to 6 inches of ice here Sunday evening and that basically shut down this region of Texas. I stayed home from work and watched movies yesterday........We've been running trotlines her in the month of May in the shallow button willow flats wearing our waders and even though we don't have gators yet the water moccasins have a tendency to get a little friendly......we do some good numbers but it is risky......
