I've been studying lithium batteries for a while and even though they are expensive I'm thinking about running them for the weight savings, the duration that they run over lead acid, and how fast they recharge.
The brand that I am looking at even has batteries capable of doing double duty being a cranking and trolling battery all in one.
I saw these batteries @ a trade show and they were so light they had them floating in an aquarium.
One of the boats I have considered in my price range is the Z117 Ranger. It runs a 12 volt trolling motor with the option of 24 or 36 volt set up. From the info I read; one lithium battery running both as cranking and trolling motor battery could out perform by a wide margin, a set up on this boat where I would be running 12 volt cranking battery and a 12/24 battery set up for the trolling motor which is generally what you would see in most rigs. You'd probably have the potential to get rid of 200 to 300 pounds of weight with a single battery 12 volt lithium set up on a 17 foot rig versus running a 12 volt - 12/24 volt standard set up and you'd most definitely feel that @ the gas pump and have more top end speed as well.....Here's the info:

My experience with Lithium has not been good on power tools. Don't know about the boat batteries.

Will there is an article @ Bassmasters somewhere that I read that was about Ish Monroe and his take on lithium....he's been running them a while.....also be sure to read the first link in the first post on how they out perform your typical lead acid deep cycle battery.
I am also now looking @ aluminum boats because they so much cheaper to buy and operate but still think I may go lithium if I do this........
